A: Scientists have been investigating the effects of anesthetics on the developing brain of animals for over 20 years. While animals who have long or repeated anesthesia may have problems with learning and behavior later in life, a single carefully administered anesthetic has not been found to be associated with these problems in children.

The patient first came to medical attention at the age of 3 months because of poor eye fixation and muscular hypotonia. At 10 months of age, he suffered from his first prolonged seizure, followed by intractable focal occipital epilepsy. Additionally, he was prone to startle reactions provoked by noises. He developed microcephaly and severe motor and speech delay: at 14 months of age he had just started to turn from a supine to prone position, was not able to sit and was only able to produce simple noises. Ocular fundi were normal. He developed marked spasticity in the lower limbs. Deep tendon reflexes were brisk with ankle clonus bilaterally and extensor plantar reflexes on the left side. He attended a special class for blind children. When he was last examined at 18 years of age, he was able to sit unaided. He never learned to walk, and could not stand without assistance. General physical examination, as well as height and weight, were normal.

"I suggested to Jeff and Teddy that Harold work with us on the new stuff," says Randy, "and they agreed. It was spine-tingling when he said yes. It's a story-book episode in my life and in the career of ALABAMA to have Harold being on board and to see him as excited as we were after all these years."

When not touring with Alabama, Randy says he enjoys being alone with immediate family and most importantly, away from the telephone. While on the job, he strums a smooth and steady rhythm guitar and sings most of the solo vocals on the group's hits. He has played music since the age of 6 and has been playing with Alabama for 28 years. Randy plays by ear and says that he doesn't know how many songs he has written but jokes that "some of them have been recorded on the albums."

Carryovers: If you claim a credit with carryover provisions and the amount of the credit available this year exceeds your tax, carry over any excess credit to future years until the credit is used (unless the carryover period is a fixed number of years). If you claim a credit carryover for an expired credit, use form FTB 3540, Credit Carryover and Recapture Summary, to figure the amount of the credit. Otherwise, enter the amount of the credit on Schedule P (540), Part III, and do not attach form FTB 3540.

If your federal income tax return is examined and changed by the IRS and you owe additional tax, report these changes to the FTB within six months of the date of the final federal determination. If the changes the IRS made result in a refund due for California, claim a refund within two years of the date of the final federal determination. File an amended Form 540 and Schedule X to correct your previously filed income tax return and mail them to the following address, as applicable:

Requests for information regarding your California income tax return usually occurs within the California statute of limitations period, which is usually the later of four years from the due date of the tax return or four years from the file date of the tax return. (Exception: An extended statute of limitations period applies for California or federal tax returns related or subject to a federal audit.)

Original tax return was filed on or before April 15th: If you are making a claim for refund, file an amended tax return within four years from the original due date of the tax return or within one year from the date of overpayment, whichever period expires later.

Original tax return was filed after October 15th: If you are making a claim for refund, file an amended tax return within four years from the original due date of the tax return (April 15th) or within one year from the date of overpayment, whichever period expires later.

If the IRS examines and changes your federal income tax return, and you owe additional tax, report these changes to the FTB within six months. You do not need to inform the FTB if the changes do not increase your California tax liability. If the changes made by the IRS result in a refund due, you must file a claim for refund within two years. Use an amended Form 540 and Schedule X to make any changes to your California income tax returns previously filed.

But they both have so much fun in their courtship! While Curtis and Monroe are on Brown's yacht, Lemmon and Brown are dancing with such perfect timing that a rose in Lemmon's teeth ends up in Brown's. Lemmon has a hilarious scene the morning after his big date, laying on his bed, still in drag, playing with castanets as he announces his engagement. (Curtis: "What are you going to do on your honeymoon?" Lemmon: "He wants to go to the Riviera, but I kinda lean toward Niagara Falls.") Both Curtis and Lemmon are practicing cruel deceptions--Curtis has Monroe thinking she's met a millionaire, and Brown thinks Lemmon is a woman--but the film dances free before anyone gets hurt. Both Monroe and Brown learn the truth and don't care, and after Lemmon reveals he's a man, Brown delivers the best curtain line in the movies. If you've seen the movie, you know what it is, and if you haven't, you deserve to hear it for the first time from him.

While transplanting a healthy organ to replace a diseased or failed organ can prolong life, transplants have limits. A transplanted kidney lasts on average 10 to 13 years if the organ came from a living donor and seven to nine years if it was from a deceased donor, according to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Meanwhile, a liver will function for five years or more in 75 percent of recipients. After a heart transplant, the median survival rate of the organ is 12.5 years. A transplanted pancreas keeps working for around 11 years when combined with a kidney transplant. And a transplanted lung continues to work for about five years on average, but this increases to eight years if both lungs have been transplanted, OSU also notes.

Emmerich's special-effects spectacular is total space junk, but, script aside, this rocket ride is a blast. The far-out plot is ridiculous and the dialogue laughable at times, but Emmerich is chuckling right along with us: Moonfall knows exactly what it is and embraces it. Conspiracy theorists get their moment in the sun with a plot that has its hooks in concepts that light up certain internet chat rooms. And this "unexpected redemption" theme extends to another unlikely archetype: the "deadbeat dad." Astronaut Brian Harper is wrongly terminated by NASA; 10 years later, his life has unraveled, and he's broke, divorced, irresponsible, and the kind of dad who doesn't show up for weekends or special events. But when the end of the world is nigh, Brian steps up, becoming a hero and finally engaging as a father. It may not feel like a natural choice to build sympathy for his character, but the storytelling choice ends up like a warm hug for kids with estranged parents, since we're able to see how much Brian loves and values his child, even if Brian was a frequent disappointment.

His advent in the neighborhood had beenmysterious. The first that was known of him was onesummer morning, when he was found sitting on thebench beside the door of this cabin, which had long beenunoccupied and left to decay. He was unable to giveany account of himself, except that he always declaredthat he had been sold by some one other than his masterfrom that plantation, that his wife and boy had been soldto some other person at the same time for twelvehundred dollars (he was particular as to the amount),and that his master was coming in the summer to buyhim back and take him home, and would bring him hiswife and child when he came. Everything since that daywas a blank to him, and as he could not tell the name ofhis master or wife, or even his own name, and as no onewas left old enough to remember him, the neighborhoodhaving been entirely deserted after the war, he simplypassed as a harmless old lunatic laboring under adelusion. He was devoted to children, and Ephraim'ssmall brood were his chief delight. They were not at all afraid of him, andwhenever they got a chance they would slip off andsteal down to his house, where they might be foundany time squatting about his feet, listening to hisaccounts of his expected visit from his master, andwhat he was going to do afterward. It was all of agreat plantation, and fine carriages and horses, and ahouse with his wife and the boy.

Duck-hunting was my favorite sport, and themarshes on the river were fine ground for themusually, but this season the weather had been sosingularly warm that the sport had been poor, andthough I had scoured every canal in the marsh andevery bend in the river as far as No Haid PawnHammock, as the stretch of drifted timber andtreacherous marsh was called that marked theboundary-line of that plantation, I had had bad luck.Beyond that point I had never penetrated partly, nodoubt, because of the training of my earlier years, andpartly because the marsh on either side of thehammock would have mired a cat. Often, as Iwatched with envious eyes the wild duck rise up overthe dense trees that surrounded the place and cutstraight for the deserted marshes in the horseshoe, Ihad had a longing to invade the mysterious domain, andcrawl to the edge of No Haid Pawn and get a shot atthe fowl that floated on its black surface; butsomething had always deterred me, and the longreaches of No Haid Pawn were left to the wild-fowland the ghostly rowers. Finally, however, after a spellwhose high temperature was rather suited to Augustthan April, in desperation at my ill-luck I determined togratify my curiosity and try No Haid Pawn. So oneafternoon, without telling any one of my intention, Icrossed the mysterious boundary and struck throughthe swamp for the unknown land. 2ff7e9595c
